| Game Notes | Have to start on Saturday this week. At training I asked around the dads to see if anyone was going down the club house to watch the England Rugby match. I thought my ear problem had come back as the Blues manager seemed to say that he couldn’t, he was going into London to watch the Strictly Come Dancing show! He then repeated it; it wasn't my ears, he was going to watch Strictly. That must be a shed load of Brownie points banked. Is it a good example to the lads though?, even worse, that’s going to put a lot of pressure on the other dads as well.
Game this week was the return league match against Chorleywood at Kitchener’s field. Last time we drew 1-1 away. Team this week was Matty, Cameron, Ethan, Austin, Alex, Owen, Luca, Finlay, Denver, and Sam. Kick off was at 11:00. Thanks to Sam’s mum for refereeing. Raiders tried the usual tactic of playing up the hill in the first half and lined up accordingly. Chorleywood rumbled the tactic, won the toss and played up the hill.
Berkhamsted made good use of the slope and started playing in the Chorleywood half. First corner went to Raiders on 2mins. Denver took it from the right, good cross but met by a Chorleywood head and out. The ball went straight up the other end and Chorleywood had a shot wide to the left of the goal. On 3 minutes Denver, Matty and Finlay put together a good string of passes covering forty yards. Perhaps some of the Strictly had rubbed off on the players after all. Fin had a good shot on target well saved by the keeper.
6mins Denver had a good run up the left and Chorleywood had to put it out for a corner. Good corner but dealt with safely by Chorleywood. A third corner arrived shortly after but again no one was able to get a boot on it. Raiders were keeping up the pressure, on 10mins Matty had a good shot on goal saved by the Chorleywood keeper. Owen and Ethan were playing well in midfield linking the backs and forwards and coming back to help the defence.
From 11 mins Chorleywood came back in to the game. A run up the right ended with a hard shot across goal, but no one was there and it went out for a goal kick. Chorleywood then had another shot on goal but Sam got himself in the way, blocked it and off for a corner to Chorleywood. The corner came in high, Cameron got hands to and batted it out and safe. A second Chorleywood corner followed shortly after. Raiders cleared it out but a shot came straight back from outside the penalty area. High and no problem.
Austin and Alex were having a good game at the back and showed their confidence with a little passing move under pressure to clear the ball. On 15mins Raiders had a move up the right. Matty took the ball on his right foot and hit a good shot. Looked like it was just going wide but Luca was where he should be in attack and got a boot on it that steered it past the stranded Chorleywood keeper. 1-0 to Raiders. A just reward for Raiders efforts.
Coming to the end of the half Raiders were looking for a second goal. Another corner was cleared by Chorleywood and Matty had a 1:1 with the Chorleywood keeper; but the keeper stayed big and blocked the shot. Good keeping. That was the end of the half. Good play by Raiders and 1-0 lead at half time.
On to the second half. Raiders playing up the hill. This time Chorleywood used the slope to their advantage and played in the Raiders half. A succession of corners followed but all dealt with by Raiders, good headers by Sam, Alex, and Denver kept Chorleywood out. 5mins saw the first shot in from Chorleywood but it was wide and to the left of the goal. Cameron had a long walk to get that one. Matty’s dad would have been there for that normally. The lesson here is if you send a substitute on match day they have to know their role and have sat through the required training course (unless it’s me of course in which case Austin’s dad stands in).
7mins saw a Chorleywood corner from the left deflected towards goal accidentally by the a Raiders player, but Cameron was in the right place and scooped it up. Big sigh of relief from the parents.
8mins saw the first free kick of the match against Raiders. About 20 yards out to the right. Good kick in but cleared by Raiders. It wasn’t all Chorleywood. On 12 mins Austin hit a good long pass to Finlay in space. He took it wide around the keeper but couldn’t get a clean shot in, and it went out for a goal kick. So close, another sigh from the parents.
Time was ticking by now, 12mins gone and still 1-0 to raiders. 13 minutes saw an accurate passing move from Austin to Matty then Finlay. Finlay took it into the area and hit a good hard shot. Keeper could not do anything with it and it was 2-0 to Raiders. Parents jumped for joy.
From that point on though, Chorleywood really went for it. 14mins saw a hard shot heading for the bottom left hand corner of the goal but Cameron dived down and saved it. Good keeping. Chorleywood had a bigger player who was good on the ball and difficult to stop. He came down the right side leaving several Raiders players stranded. Hard pass across goal into the area was met by an unmarked Chorleywood player and he belted it in. Not much Cameron could do with that. 2-1.
History then repeated itself 1 minute later, looked liked an exact replay of the first Chorleywood goal, with the same result. 2-2. Big groan from the parents.
17minutes saw an incident on the right picked up by the referee. A bit of argy bargy, nothing too drastic, but a free kick against Raiders not too far out. This was kicked in hard across goal and again picked up by a Chorleywood player, Cameron came for it but couldn’t get there, Chorleywood thumped it in. 3-2 to Chorleywood.
Raiders tried to get one back but it was just not happening. On 20 mins a repeat of the first two Chorleywood goals took place. Down the right, across goal and thumped in. Final whistle blew and it was 4-2 to Chorleywood. Has to be the most disappointing game for a long, long time. Feels like it we had it, then it was snatched away.
Match of the match was Owen for a lot of effort in midfield.
