Game NotesToday we were lucky, plain and simple.

Although the wind was cold, the pitch very small and it’s been I can’t remember how long since we last got a game in, the Reds were extremely lucky to come up against a team from a much lower division in this Cup tie (Tring are 23 places below the Reds – that’s 3 whole divisions). The first half was probably our worst collective performance this season as time after time first touches were not controlled, passes were pinged out of play, boys clustered around the ball like fresh U-7’s, challenges were shied away from and generally we tried our hardest (and succeeded, unfortunately) to play down to our opponents’ level. If not for a sharp near-goal line clearance we could easily have reached half time 1-0 down, and given the amount of space and time we gave Tring that wouldn’t have been too unfair. Half time brought out the “manager’s hairdryer” treatment, during which the boys were told in no uncertain terms how bad they had been, and what needed changing.

The good news is that the boys listened, and raised their game. The second half was much better, with many of the first half issues generally corrected and a better level of application and concentration coming from all the boys. In the end, aided by a bit of an implosion from the Tring side, we eventually ran out winners with goals from Ben Pangbourne – which helped settle us down – Will Foley, Oliver B and a pair from Edmund Bryant (who as a result picked up the MoM award). Rarely has a side deserved such a scoreline less, but all the record books will show is 5-0, which in no way reflects the true difference between the sides overall.

The clever trick now is to take today’s match as the wake-up call it most certainly was, and use the lessons learnt to come roaring out against Park Street next Saturday !
