| Game Notes | Oooooooo what a beautiful morning; ooooooo what a beautiful day; I've got a
wonderful feeling, every ........etc.......etc....etc... You know the
song and you get the picture.
At last, after two weeks of postponed matches the Berkhamsted Raiders U8
Greens were back on the road popping up at our neighbours the Tring
Tornadoes. It was truly a lovely morning, there was a light frost on the
ground and the sun was breaking through. It was a good day to play
football for sure.
On to the match, kick off 10am, Greens won the toss and decided to kick off.
Right from the off the Greens went on the offensive and tested the Tring
team a couple of times with some neat passes and a couple of shots on
target. The first goal was well taken by Matthew who on the right wing
took a pass from Joseph and beautifully lofted the ball over the advancing
goalkeeper. What a well taken goal.
Tring not to be out done played some good neat football through the middle
of the park and advanced down the wings. The Greens defense, very solid,
broke up much of the play. On the occasions that Tring did break through
Nicholas the goalkeeper made good calls and cleared his lines or collected
the ball and set the Greens back on the attack.
Several times the Greens got close to the Tring goal and were unlucky not to
get a second with some tremendous defending and brave goalkeeping by the
Tring team. With the score at 0-1 to the Greens there was always the
chance that Tring would get an equaliser. They came close a few times with
the ball whizzing past the posts but the equalizer came at the very end of
the first half with the ball bobbling around in the Berkhamsted box, several
players from both sides going for the ball and it somehow was poked out of
the reach of the diving keeper. So half time 1-1, Berkhamsted had much of
the possession in the first half but couldn't make it count in goals. .
2nd half, Berkhamsted keeping the same formation that has become a winning
formula put Joseph in goal, Katie, Nicholas and Noah across the back; Miles
in midfield with Zac and Daniel Stockton up front. Tring kick off and
Damian's instruction to get in on Tring quickly was taken to heart with Zac
tackling right from the word go. That surprised Tring and Zac got the ball
to an advancing Daniel Stockton who swerved through the Tring defence and
shooting from long range rocketed the ball through the goalkeeper's hands
and into the back of the net. Barely a minute into the 2nd half and it is
1-2 to the Greens. From then on Tring really couldn't get going they had
some half chances but really didn't trouble the Greens goalkeeper, the
Berkhamsted defence, led by Katie, breaking down any Tring advances. The
game more and more was played in the Tring half with much of the possession
and creative flair coming from the away team, a third goal must be on the
cards.
Opportunities started to come the Greens way. Daniel Stockton struck the
ball against the foot of the upright and the ball spun on the goal line,
Miles the furthest forward was following the ball in and with an open goal
at his beckoning he tapped the ball that amazingly ran along the goal line
and into the hands of a relieved Tring keeper. Surely the referee would
give the goal but it didn't stand. The call for goalmouth technology to
assist the referee can be heard loud and clear in the corridors of power at
BRCFC.
More neat work from Berkhamsted and from a set piece (corner) Nicholas put
in a good cross that got out to Noah standing on the edge of the box who
struck the ball first time and in it went, great goal to make it 1-3
.
Then finally Daniel taking a pass from Matthew on the right hand side ran at
the goal and couldn't decide to pass back to the supporting players or to
shoot. In truth Daniel did neither but somehow, rather luckily, the ball
bounced off a Tring player and into his own net. A fortunate goal making it
a 1-4 win for the Greens
Lots of positives to take out of the game, the team kept its formation
really well and the players held their positions. There was some great
movement off the ball with neat passing. Tring were kept at bay especially
in the second half and poor Joseph must have got pretty damn cold in the
closing 20 minutes because he had little to do.
Man of the match went to Katie for some excellent defending work, breaking
up any Tring attack and holding the back line. Katie's positional play was
great and she supported the rest of the team fantastically. Katie had an
excellent game.
So it's a home game next week, Dads don't forget it is Mothering Sunday this
coming Sunday so get up early and get mummy breakfast in bed. Toast &
Marmite should do the trick.
