Berkhamsted Raiders Red 2 Garston 0
This was a light hearted and fun game to end the season, with the result immaterial to the positions the two teams finished in the table. Raiders had already decided to draw lots for their positions to spice things up a bit, but Garston added to the fun by only turning up with 8 players so Sam, Charlie and Hugh volunteered to defect to the opposition!
The result was a fairly evenly matched game with most of the Raiders players out of their normal position most of the time… although Ben Ranger did look like he would like to play in goal more often… Jack had the first decent shot of the game, sending the ball just over the Garston crossbar, and a few minutes later he got the only goal of the half following Blew’s run down the right and David’s cross which picked him out unmarked on the edge of the area. Conall in striker position for the first half was denied from a lovely cross by Toby which he volleyed in only to see it blocked by Charlie Stevens playing for Garston!
More changes followed at half time, with the return of the three defectors, but this time Jack and David went over to the other side, and Sibbo ended up in the Raiders goal. Raiders had much the better of the second half, with Callum, Charlie, Harry and Hugh all shooting wide, but eventually they won a second goal with Hugh’s finish from Dan’s corner. Jack also played an excellent cross to David who nearly headed the ball in the net…but they were playing for Garston at the time!
However, unfortunately there was some controversy before the game was over. Sam had settled into his outfield role and unleashed a stunning shot which cracked into the underside of the Garston crossbar and bounced down onto the line. In 1966 that was good enough, but the referee on this occasion was having none of it. The crowd were outraged and a number of inappropriate comments were made about eyesight and the like, but the decision stood. It was a sad end to an otherwise excellent season for our referee…. and his son!
Joking aside, it was good to see the boys having fun and playing in such good spirit to end their season. It has been an excellent season, with second place to show for it and many great memories.
Ian, Patrick and Gary were presented with a bottle of well deserved fine champagne at the end of the match, having just helped give Charlie Stevens the 'bumps' for his birthday.
Well done everyone – and here’s to 2010/11! Roll on August!!
